America First or America Always

You've heard it before, a politician is making an appeal for votes and asking members of the opposite party to put: "America First".

Every time I hear a politician say this I can't help but ask out loud:

  • First?
  • Don't you mean always?
  • Who else would come first?
  • And why is there a second or third?

These are of course rhetorical questions. Politicians today serve their ideology, their party, special interest groups and other subset of Americans. They serve something other than all Americans so routinely, that when making an appeal for a broader good they remind each other to put America first.

That's the problem with public servants today, they serve subsets of Americans, they need to drop any rigid adherence to ideology, stop serving their party, and start putting "America Always".
