Refresh the Tax Code
The Problem: Our tax code is unfair and complex but our current crop of leaders have no desire to fix it.
The Root Cause: Lawmakers use the tax code as a tool to manipulate social behavior and raise political contributions from groups looking for tax benefits.
The Solution: Refresh the tax code. Make it simple and fair. Broaden the base, lower the rates. No deductions other than the standard deduction, no joint filing. Capital gains are treated like ordinary income. After the refresh, keep the code simple to prevent politicians from using it as a tool to punish their enemies, reward their friends, and raise money for their campaigns.
And if the government wants to encourage social change it should stop trying to manipulate citizens through the tax code and instead author unbiased information consumers can use to make market based decisions.
